Eagles –
Hotel California
If
you were young in the mid-70’s, this album had to have
been a major part of your musical life. For about two years from its
release in
1976 it was everywhere. I remember having to get a second copy (this
was back
in the days of vinyl), because I plumb wore out the grooves in the
first one.
Every
aspiring guitarist at some point wants to have a go at
this song. It starts with an intro that is recognisable from the first
down
stroke of the first chord, and ends with one of the greatest guitar
solos ever.
Here
we show you the acoustic guitar part – perfect if you
want to play a solo version. Don Felder of The Eagles plays it on a
12-string
guitar, so we do too (it really helps to hear how the Eagles get the
guitar
sound they do on the record), but don’t worry if you
don’t have a 12-string. It
sounds great on 6-string and we teach it using the same “put
this finger on
this string at this fret” teaching style as we do for all our
videos.
I
would classify this as ‘tricky-intermediate level’.
If
you’re new to the guitar it will seem very hard (for now, but
try it again in a
year or so). It involves picking individual strings. You can use your
fingers,
but then you’ll need to strum the chorus, so we teach it
using a pick all the
way through – which is what Don Felder does on the original.
With
some concentrated practice you can play one of the most
requested guitar songs of all time. Watch their faces when you launch
into this
one at the next family gathering!
